Mending and Sashiko Lab
Mend ─ don’t dump*! Throughout March and April 2022, CHAT Lab will continue its mending journey to help you give your pre-loved garments a longer, more fashionable second life. Immerse yourself in the meditative action of pulling needle and thread and let’s make together!
Participants are invited to learn sashiko , a traditional Japanese decorative mending technique. Used since the Edo period in Japan to reinforce homemade textiles made of hand-spun cotton, this technique uses ‘little stabs’ (刺し子 in Japanese) to create beautiful patterns that are both strong and mesmerisingly beautiful.
Learn how to reinforce the delicate areas of your jeans, jackets or even socks to make them last longer. A range of sashiko stitches will be taught according to the specific needs of the participant’s garment.
This workshop will be conducted online, participants will receive a Zoom link after registration. Invite a friend or more to receive a group offer!
Experience level: This activity is better suited for participants with some stitching experience but welcomes beginners as well
Material needed: Participants must prepare their own pre-loved garment to mend. Participants may request a CHAT mending kit (1 embroidery hoop, 2 to 3 colours of embroidery floss, 2 needles, fabric pieces) to be posted to them for $HK150. Note that delivery takes up to 4 days so participants must sign up by the Saturday before the workshop.
Language: Cantonese and English
Fee (applicable to a single registration):
HK$180/head
10% off for 2 to 4 sessions (same person) or 2 to 4 persons (same session)
*Did you know that the equivalent of 4 double-decker buses of clothes are dumped in Hong Kong every day? According to a 2016 study by the Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department, 340 tonnes of discarded clothes are sent to landfills daily, which is equivalent to approximately 700,000 sweaters.
