Make Your Own Stencil: Indigo Dyeing Experience
Indigo is a natural blue dye extracted from plants, such as Indigofera tinctoria , Polygonum tinctorium (Japanese Indigo) and Strobilanthes cusia (Chinese Indigo). Since 2019, CHAT has developed Seed to Textile, a project that explores the community impact of growing and processing Indigo and other natural dyes in Hong Kong with a group of farmers, artists and collaborators.
In this 4-hour advanced workshop for dyeing enthusiasts, participants will carve their own stencil motif on Japanese katagami paper, to then apply rice paste to fabric before dyeing in the indigo vat.
During the first two hours, participants will be introduced to traditional stencil repeat designs and cutting techniques. Participants will then sketch and cut their own design. In the subsequent two hours, participants will apply rice paste onto textile using their stencil, and dip dye it in CHAT’s Japanese sukumo indigo vat. Each participant will bring home their dyed handkerchief and paper stencil.
Each participant must bring their own design. Note this workshop requires the use of cutters, knifes and sharp tools thus participants must be comfortable with the use of these. CHAT will provide a series of stencils for participants to experiment with.
Experience level: This activity is better suited for participants with experience but welcomes beginners as well. Suitable for participants aged 16 or above.
Materials needed: All tools and materials will be provided, including ONE 45x45cm handkerchief to dye per participant
Language: Cantonese and English
