Flowers of Shanghai: Conversations on Rebecca Pan with Benny SY Li
Qipao, concessions, nightclubs, jazz, ‘Paris of the Orient’, a Japanese occupation, the Cultural Revolution, a present-day global metropolis – Shanghai since the 19th century has been a place of constant change without a moment of quiet.
Born into such a motley Shanghai in 1930 is Rebecca Pan, who later relocated to Hong Kong in 1949 alongside a generation of Shanghainese people that affected remarkable change to the southern city. This sharing on the occasion of the exhibition With the Sun, She Quells the Night – A Tribute to Rebecca Pan invites Benny SY Li, acclaimed writer and long-time friend of the cultural pioneer, to converse on the changes of Shanghai through Pan’s and his own experience, as well as the complex relationship between the mainland city and Hong Kong through the years.
Joining Li as a discussant will be Wang Weiwei, Curator of Exhibitions and Collections at CHAT.
