Bright Fabric of Dong: Band Weaving Experience
Learn about the textile culture of the Dong ethnic group in China and weave your own phone strap using their traditional techniques.
Patterned bands have been part of every aspect of Dong women’s lives – from mothers weaving baby wraps and shoulder straps for their children to villagers gathering to make luck-bringing bracelets for the young. These bands feature intricate designs like plum blossoms and snake bones or simpler ones such as stripes and fish bones, all carrying the well wishes and affection of the weaver. Weaving is more than a tradition passed down through generations; it is an everyday language of expression.
In this workshop, veteran textile expert and researcher Xing Zhen will lead participants to learn the fundamental principles of band weaving. You will turn your body into a ‘loom’ and use traditional Dong weaving techniques to design and craft beautiful patterns, bringing home a one-of-a-kind phone strap in the end. Join us and experience first-hand the charm of Dong culture and craftsmanship!
