Slavs and Tatars and You Mi, two of the guest curators of CHAT’s Spring Programmes 2023 Clouds, Power and Ornaments – Roving Central Asia  will share their insights about the textile culture and contemporary art from Central Asia, in dialogue with Wang Weiwei, curator of CHAT about the initiation of the exhibition,  research and curatorial experiences.

There’s no Place​

Jakkai Siributr’s There’s no Place is a collaborative ‘call-and-response’ embroidery installation project that seeks to create an ongoing dialogue between the Shan community of Northern Thailand and the general public. Building upon the artist’s earlier work on displacement, this is a participatory project inspired by a personal attempt to reckon with the protracted refugee situation in Thailand.

Experience level: No prior experience of sewing or embroidery is required. The artist will be on site to discuss the project and offer instructions on embroidery.
Materials needed: All materials will be provided.

During this first preview of CHAT’s Summer Programme 2023 With the Sun, She Quells the Night – A Tribute Exhibition to Rebecca Pan, artist Enoch Cheng will share his conception of a large-scale video installation that celebrates Pan’s avant-garde creativity. Wang Weiwei, curator of CHAT, will moderate the discussion, as well as share the curatorial development of the exhibition.

Crafting Community – Building Community Through Textile Art​

Cut Thread: Artist-Led Textile Experience

London-based artist Ibiye Camp invites Hong Kong participants to re-imagine cloth by cutting and removing threads to create a new texture. This process known as Pelete-bite, meaning ‘cut-thread’, belongs to the Kalabari culture in Buguma, Nigeria. The final pulled thread textile is called Injiri. During the process, the artist will share on ‘Remaining Threads’, a research project of the transnational textile practices and production in the Greater Bay Area supported by Design Trust.

All materials provided and suitable for all ages 12 or above.

Decorate-Your-Own Wax Print Pouch

Reviving and Preserving Traditions in Textile Art Making​
