Indigo Dip & Resist Dye Experiential Workshop
Indigo is a natural blue dye extracted from plants, such as Indigofera tinctoria , Polygonum tinctorium (Japanese indigo) and Strobilanthes cusia (Chinese indigo). Since 2019, CHAT has developed Seed to Textile, a project that explores the community impact of growing and processing indigo and other natural dyes in Hong Kong with a group of farmers, artists and collaborators.
This 2-hour workshop offers participants the experience of dyeing with CHAT’s traditional Japanese fermentation indigo dye vat.
In this workshop, participants will learn to make beautiful patterns using Itajime shibori (Clamp resist) resist dye technique.
Participant will practice each technique ahead of making their final handkerchief using the tools and techniques learnt during the session.
Experience level: This activity is better suited for participants with experience but welcomes beginners as well. Suitable for participants aged 16 or above.
Materials needed: All tools and materials will be provided, including ONE handkerchief to dye per participant.
Language: Cantonese and English
