Curator Talk: Where is Central Asia? Movement, Senses, Aesthetics
Out of the dramatic political and social changes following the Soviet dissolution, a vibrant art scene began to take shape in the diverse region of Central Asia, which has started to garner the world’s attention. Artists from this region have been reflecting on and reimagining existing socio-cultural structures by offering new aesthetic models.
Alexandra Tsay, an independent curator from Kazakhstan and CHAT’s 2022 Artist-in-Residence, will share her insights on the contemporary artistic landscape of Central Asia, addressing both concepts and aesthetics. In this curator talk, she will also discuss the findings of her curatorial research in Hong Kong, which attempts to uncover the commonalities of artistic practice between distant geographic locales within Asia. Tsay has worked extensively on curating exhibitions and programmed festivals in Kazakhstan and contributed to publications related to Central Asia.
