Saturday School – The India Textile Journey – Weaving, Embroidery and Woodblock Printing
Ya-chu Kang illustrates a textile journey from an artist’s perspective. Her Indian textile journey started with one of her environmental art projects in Gujarat, India’s westernmost state, where she learned about how nature and the environment influences traditional craftsmanship. She met the nomadic people of Kutch district in Western India who were proficient at embroidery. The delicate patchwork and Shisheh embroidery (mirror work) on their garments reflect a desert landscape under a scorching sun; in the old weaving factory in central India, a jacquard loom covered with dust laments the dying of the hand-weaving industry… Through these stories woven with fibres, we are able to understand the lives of different peoples and find ways to coexist with nature.
