Saturday School – Musical Madness in Mumbai: Music from Theatre, Cinema, and Textile Mills
Love and madness come together in the metropolis as a condition of subjective excess. This talk focuses on musicophilia (or the craving of or responsiveness to music) in Mumbai from the late 19th century to the present. This phenomenon of music-loving and the concept of a lingua musica help us grasp the way in which urban dwellers connect with each other in a large colonial port-city like Mumbai. This talk will be illustrated with examples of Hindustani classical music, music from theatre and cinema, and from the gatherings of textile mill -workers.
Capacity: 50
Language: English with simultaneous interpretation into Cantonese
