Indigo Dyeing with Hong Kong Blue

$480RSVP

Come and learn about Hong Kong’s own indigo plant!

Over the past few years, CHAT has been growing different plants and extracting natural dye pigments from them. This year, CHAT’s community programme Seed to Textile has teamed up with Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden to explore the applications of Chinese indigo (Strobilanthes cusia). Also used in traditional Chinese medicine, the plant has a long history in Hong Kong and neighbouring regions.

In this workshop, you will learn about sukumo, a traditional composting method from Japan, and wet pigment extraction. Through these two fascinating processes, you will produce pigment from local plants and make fully organic indigo dye. Using two different vats of dye, you will experiment with various resist dye techniques to create two unique handkerchiefs.

Experience level: This activity is best suited for participants with some dyeing experience but also welcomes beginners. Suitable for participants aged 12 or above.

Materials: All tools and materials are provided, including two 45 x 45 cm handkerchiefs for each participant.
