What’s collecting dust in your closet – a qipao too formal to wear, or a cotton-padded jacket from your childhood?

In this two-hour salon-style workshop, participants are invited to bring in a neglected traditional Chinese garment for consultation on how to style, alter, mend, improvise, and reactivate it for contemporary life under the guidance of film costume designer Edith Cheung and upcycling fashion designer Toby Crispy. In the beginning, the hosts will conduct a show-and-tell on their respective practices and sources of inspiration found in film costumes and in sustainable fashion. Then, participants will be asked to share about their own garment, and the hosts will provide upcycling suggestions and demonstrations. By the end, participants should feel empowered to upcycle with a tailor’s help, or even on their own.

The programme is co-hosted by CHAT and the Hong Kong Film Archive on the occasion of the exhibition Cinderella and Her Qipao, on view from now until 5 May 2024 at the Hong Kong Film Archive.

Experience level: All are welcome, no prior experience necessary
Materials: Participants are requested to bring in a traditional Chinese garment for discussion. Prior to the event, participants will be contacted to share an image of the garment for the hosts’ reference.
