Wax Print as Global Phenomenon: A Hands-On Introduction to Batik
What is a common art form found across China, Southeast Asia, India and Africa? And how has Hong Kong participated in this global phenomenon?
During this programme, geographical historian and artist Clifford J Pereira will share on the historical development of batik , a traditional wax resist-dyed fabric, tracing its historical origins in Indonesia to its contemporary varieties around the world. Importantly, the discussion will also focus on a story of Hong Kong’s participation in the history of batik . A hands-on element will be included for participants to understand the creative process of resist-dyeing with wax.
The programme happens on the occassion of the special display ‘Patternways: Visualising Hong Kong in Transition’.
Experience level: Suitable for participants aged 12 or above
Materials needed: All materials will be provided
Language: English with Simple Translation to Cantonese
