Seed to Textile: Indigo Bag
Rooted in the heritage and innovative spirit of the textile industry in Hong Kong, CHAT has developed the Seed to Textile programme, a year-long indigo community project that traces textile manufacturing down to its origin. The indigo dye used in the CHAT Originals Seed to Textile: Indigo Bag is produced from our home-grown indigo plants. The three silkscreen-printed designs on the bags are created by Hong Kong-based designer UUendy Lau, who was inspired by iconic local plants. A series of dyeing workshops open to the public will also be conducted from September to November 2021, during the Seed to Textile exhibition period.
About the three Designs:
Hong Kong Camellia
Representing Hong Kong’s heritage and history, this native species was first discovered in 1849.
Cotton
CHAT’s heritage stemmed from Nan Fung Textiles, a cotton spinning mill that operated from 1954 to 2008.
Ficus Microcarpa
Commonly found in many residential neighbourhoods in Hong Kong, this towering tree (ficus microcarpa) should be a familiar sight to many local communities.
