Julia Wilmott
Dr Julia Wilmott is a textiles designer, educator and researcher who has worked in the fashion and textiles industry for twenty years. After a decade working as a knitwear designer for many brands in the United Kingdom, Wilmott moved into academia. She began teaching knitwear design for fashion at undergraduate level while undertaking research into knitted textiles for sustainability concurrently. Wilmott has recently completed a practice-based doctorate in knitted textiles, specifically examining how knitted textiles methods can improve the tactility of a number of different wool fibres that are available but often under-utilised due to their perceived itchy handle. Wilmott’s research examines how fibres can be blended together by patterns and structures created on the knitting machine in order to enhance the longevity and use of each fibre type for the future. Wilmott is now based in Hong Kong, exploring how knitted textiles can improve the longevity of local fibres for the future. Wilmott received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Arts London (2005) and her doctorate in Textiles Design From Northumbria University (2023).
